McPherson, Nebraska, November-December 1866, at Ft. Laramie, Dakota Territory 30 June to 3 August 1867, Ft. D. A. Russell, Dakota Territory to November 1867, and again at Ft. Laramie from 9 June 1868. On 1 November 1867, he was promoted to First Lieutenant 2nd Cavalry. Neff took a leave of absence from 21 February to 15 May 1868. He served on Escort Duty to July 1868, and then was detailed to Ft. C. F. Smith, Montana Territory. Died while on active duty, Fort C.F. Smith, Montana Territory.

  1. I am trying to marry together in 1881 pattern officers helmet with the name found on the inside in four places: “Nichols”. Based on several attributes of the helmet I can trace this officer to the years between 1882 and 1888. I cannot seem to make any kind of connection even though it is clearly from the second cavalry and all original.
