  1. I have a brass cross-saber emblem with “2” above and “L” below. I assume that means “L” Troop, 2nd Cavalry. The dark patina shade of the brass or bronze suggests that the piece is old.

My uncle said that my Grandfather (Emil Beyerchen) served in the U.S. Cavalry from 1908-1912. My deceased uncle gave the cross-saber emblem to me in 1998, but he was unable to verify whether that was actually my Grandfather’s unit.

Would your association be able to help me track down source documents that might steer me in the direction of verifying my Grandfather’s service and the postings of “L” Troop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment circa 1908-1912?

Sincerely, Ronald Pickrahn, Capt, USMC (1977-1989)

    • Ronald,
Thank you for visiting the 2d Cavalry Association website and leaving your comment. Thank you also for your service to our country.

In response to your question, I could find no documentation among my limited resources confirming Emil Beyerchen was a member of the 2d Cavalry Regiment between 1908-1912, but I did do a search on Ancestry.com and found a WW I draft registry card for Emil Otto Beyerchen, born 27 February 1887, from Detroit, Michigan, and it states he had three years prior service as a private in the Cavalry.

I also found an Emil Beyerchen on the 1910 Census, father Bernhard, mother Fredericka, older brother Walter and younger brother Gustav, living in Detroit. Ring any bells?

The crossed sabers would indeed be from Company L, 2d Cavalry Regiment (they were designated companies at the time instead of troops). Without seeing a photo front and back I wouldn’t be able to tell how old the branch insignia are. The type of pin/clasp used to attach it to the uniform helps narrow it down newer or older.

Between 1908 – 1912 Co. L, 2d Cavalry was engaged in combat during the following periods:

      December 2, 1911, between Siet Lake and Taglibi, Philippine Islands, Co.’s I, K, L, M, 2d Cavalry.

      December 4, 1911, Mount Bagsok, Jolo, Philippine Islands, Co.’s I, K, L, M, 2d Cavalry.

      December 16 – January 4, 1911, Mount Bud Dajo, Jolo, Philippine Islands, Co.’s A, B, C, D, I, K, L, M, and Machine Gun Platoon, 2d Cavalry.

The National Archives has a website that you can order copies of your grandfather’s service records at. Click on the following link and it will have the information for requesting pre-WW I records and the form you need.

      http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pre-ww-1-records.html

The following information is copied from the site about researching records prior to November 1, 1912 and may help:

      Regular Army
      Enlisted Men

The War Department did not compile military service records for those who served in the Regular Army. The place to start researching enlisted men is the Regular Army Enlistment Papers, 1798–1894 (RG 94, entry 91). This series is arranged alphabetically by name of soldier and generally shows the soldier’s name, place of enlistment, date, by whom enlisted, age, place of birth, occupation, personal description, regimental assignment, and certifications of the examining surgeon and recruiting officer. Soldiers usually have multiple enlistment papers if they served two or more enlistments.

Researchers should also consult the Register of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798–1914, National Archives Microfilm Publication M233. The register of enlistments is arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically by first letter of surname. The register usually shows the individual’s name, military organization, physical description, age at time of enlistment, place of birth, enlistment information, discharge information, and remarks. For more detailed information concerning service, consult the unit muster rolls, which are arranged by arm of service; thereunder by regiment number; then alphabetically by company, troop, or battery; and thereunder chronologically. The muster rolls are found in RG 94, entry 53, Muster Rolls of Regular Army Organizations, 1784–October 31, 1912.

I hope this will be of some help. Best of luck to you in your search, and I’d love to hear what you find out.
