SECOND SEMINOLE WAR; Florida, Georgia 1836-1842
One officer of the 2d Dragoons was killed in action during the Second Seminole War, and five died from disease and climate. Twenty non-commissioned officers, musicians, and privates were killed in action, while one-hundred ninety-two died from disease.

Public Resolution 82 contained a provision for a Navy medal of valor, and was signed into law on 21 Dec 1861 by President Abraham Lincoln. A similar resolution on behalf of the Army calling for a medal of honor was signed into law on 12 Jul 1862.
