us5e2cv61 The depredations of the Navajo Indians in New Mexico became so numerous in 1860 that it was necessary to send some of the troops from Utah to that territory. Among those which went there were Companies G and I, Second Dragoons, arriving at Fort Garland and Eutaw Creek respectively July 27. Taking the field as a party of the Navajo Expedition in September, they continued in pursuit of the Indians until October 28. During this time they assisted in the capture of 2,000 sheep and 200 horses, and killed six Indians.

During six months of this year it was calculated that the regiment marched 7,650 miles in the states of Oregon, California, New Mexico, Kansas, and Nebraska. A march the following spring made by Lieutenant Sanders and a sergeant in pursuit of deserters is worthy of notice. They followed the deserters from Fort Crittenden (Camp Floyd), Utah, to the vicinity of Los Angeles, where they were captured and turned over to the nearest post. The detachment left March 30, and returned May 31, marching 1,600 miles in fifty-nine days.

At the end of the year 1860 the Second Dragoons were stationed as follows: Regimental Headquarters, Band, and Companies B, E, and H at Fort Crittenden (Camp Floyd), Utah; A at Fort Kearney, Nebraska; C and K at Fort Scott, Kansas; D and F at Fort Laramie, Wyoming; G and I at Taos, New Mexico.
