Hi, I just found this site, while trying to locate a book that my father, Arthur L. Lambert (Col, Retired) wrote after WWII. I believe it is Ghosts of Patton’s Third Army: A history of the 2nd US Calvary. He donated his only copy to a museum in France years before he died. I have not been able to locate another copy. I am also very interested in the history as well. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

I was part of the Outlaw troop troop that deployed in 2003-2004 and I just want to say thank you so much for this site. I wish I could find some people I have lost along the way, maybe I will. Thank you so much, 4/2 ACR was my only unit and I am grateful to be part of The Cav.

    John,
All I have is a brief history of the Fort Riley Cavalry School between 1853 to 1936 and the 2nd Cavalry’s relationship to the school. Sorry it isn’t much. Ft Riley 1853-1936.

Your dad was in during a major transitional period for the Cavalry. WW I was still a fresh memory and WW II was looming on the horizon. Horses were being replaced with mechanization. Units were being deactivated and new units formed, while other units were completely restructured and rebuilt from scratch. Change was the word of the day. New technologies and techniques were being implemented into the Cavalry units, like radio communication, combined arms tactics with planes, artillery, armor, infantry, etc. Your dad witnessed the end of the horse mounted Cavalry in the U.S.

Five years later my dad was there as a Mechanized Cavalry instructor. Do you know what unit your dad was with and what he did after leaving the Cavalry School?

Sorry I cannot assist with the previous posts but I have an inquiry of my own.
I have a photograph of the “Second U.S. Calvary” taken at Ft. Ethan Allen, Vermont. It is from the WWI era, I believe 1919 or so based on what research I have been able to do. The photographer was one McAllister of Burlington, VT. There is also a reference of “No. 2″ But I do not know if this means print #2 of (how many?) or 2nd take of (how many?) or whatever.
The photo is also interesting because it was taken with a large format multiple pinhole camera and it seems that the wind direction changed during the exposure (the guidons at each end of the formation point inward).
My paternal grandmother’s brother (great uncle), Frank Brunchwiler, is in the photo so I would appreciate any info anyone may have regarding it or the 2nd’s history at this time.
    Thank you

My Father was Albert F. De Amicis, deceased, May 2007. My father was proud to have fought for Troop A, 2d Squadron, 2d Cavalry Group (Mecz)one of Patton’s Ghosts.
In honor of General George Patton, my father and his fellow soldiers, I wrote a paper on the European Theater of Operations, to honor these fine men. If interested in reading this paper, go to the following link:

Lastly, I’d like to thank all of you for your service.

  12. John Murphyon 01 Jun 2010 at 11:26

I believe my father served in the 2nd Cavalry in WWII. I remember him talking about the Snow Ghost Patrol an saw a book with the story in it. He died in 1986 and was thinking about trying to find out a some more about his military career. His name is John Murphy and his RA 31285476. He was a good baseball player and may even have played on the Troop teams. Thanks for any info. John Jr.

  13. David.Gettmanon 01 Jun 2010 at 17:51

Was his middle initial “P”, as in John P. Murphy?

  14. David.Gettmanon 02 Jun 2010 at 09:31

    John,
Thank you for your father’s service to our country and the 2d Cavalry Regiment. We have a long and proud history as the oldest continuously serving mounted regiment in the US Army, established in 1836. Our veteran’s association was the first and is the oldest unit specific veteran’s organization in the US, established in 1899 by our Spanish-American War veterans returning from fighting in Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Here is a link to the roster for Troop B, 2d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 2d Cavalry Group (Mechanized), from WW II. You can read detailed accounts of B Troop in the WW II section of the website. http://history.dragoons.org/2003/12/20/b-troop-2d-sqdn-2d-cavalry-group-1942-46/

I looked on Ancestry.com for your dad’s enlistment record and found several John P. Murphy’s from Massachusetts who enlisted during WW II. What year was he born?

If you have any questions or would like help trying to get your dad’s records and medals (totally free) from the National Archives, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

There were unit pictures taken every year in the 2nd Cav. Do they still exist? Were they left behind? Does anyone know?

My son and his son would like a copy.

    Alex,
The Regiment didn’t hang on to the troop photos. I’ve managed to find a relative few from assorted troops and years, and have them posted on one of the 2d Cavalry Association’s websites. What troops and years are you looking for?

Sometimes one of the DRAGOON BASE members will have his troop photo and post a copy. If it is clear enough to read the names, I grab a copy for the 2d Cavalry Association archives. I’ve got entire copies of some of the yearbooks also.

Give me a holler and I’ll see if I have something you are looking for. Might also want to stop by DRAGOON BASE and check it out. We have over 2300 former and current 2d Cavalry members over there.

    Toujours Pret!

My grandfather was Col. Joseph Idus Lambert. He wrote a book for the 2nd Cav on the 2nd Cav for the prior 100 years. It is called 100 Years With The Second Cavalry. I have decided to reprint the original of his book and can provide copies for sale and shipping costs. The maps therein are second to none and and all are included in the reprint. I will provide at cost a copy of the book to all 2nd members who want one. The cost is $50 each plus shipping which should be no more that a few dollars at media mail rate unless you want it faster or you are not in the states.

Please feel free to contact me at 214-343-6811 in Dallas and ask for Dick or Nancy Davenport. Just say you would like to get a copy of the 2nd Cav book and we will take your name and address down and send as many copies as you choose.

Hi, I am looking for anyone that knew a Sergeant First Class Samuel Zrini. From what I have researched by the ribbons and patches on his jacket I believe he was in the 3rd battalion, 351st Infantry Regiment (There was a blue ribbon in cased with a gold plated trim) There is also a letter A patch indicating 3rd Army Bullion made in Occupied Germany Circa 1945-1947, he has three overseas bars on the left lower sleeve. I am still researching the rest of the ribbons. He also has a toujours pret patch on the left sleeve and two pins of the same and a machine gun pin as well on the jacket. If anyone knew him could you please contact me. I am his grand daughter and he was the most important person in my life and still is to this day. He said he would tell me when I was older but never got a chance to tell me about his time in the war since he died in the early 1990′s of cancer from asbestos. Thank you so very much.

I have some photos of US horse cavalry from 1942. The troup was traveling from Yuma to Laguna and Imperial dams on the Colorado. The NCOIC was Sgt. John A Cox.
The photos are labeled “Troup C, 2nd Cavalry”.

The last thing I heard was that they were being sent to Texas to transition into armor.

If anyone has the complete designation of the unit as well as info about what became of the unit, and of Sgt. Cox, I would be very happy to learn.

    Dear All,

I am Belgian Citizen, and my mother was a little child during the World War II. Her house was in Belgium, in the village of Sainte-Marie Chevigny near Libramont at 20km of Bastogne.

During winter 1944 in the Belgium’s Ardennes, they had at home some US Army military for couple of days. One of those US military was an Officer with surname of Roland and with grade of Captain (At least an Officer). I do not know his corps (probably the 6th Cavalry Group was located at Christmas period in the village of Sainte-Marie-Chevigny.) and his family (last) name.

My mother (72 year old today) always told us she was impressed and “in love” as a small child can be in front of a Captain who came in they village to save the people against de Germans. The Captain Roland gave her a small picture of him (here-attached).

It is late, very late… but I decided to find back this Captain or his family in order to exchange history and gratitude more than 66 year after…

I did find your name on the web, could you please give me some idea to find the person my mother is looking for? I want to enter in contact with Roland and/or his family and exchange souvenirs and history from the winter 1944 in the Ardennes in Belgium. Maybe the list of Officer part of the 6th Cavalry Group in December 44?

In advance, many thanks for your help.

    Best regards

    Bernard Dubois

    Good Afternoon,
I am the daughter of John D. Blackley (From New York, European Theater WWII with Patton, served in the tank corps).
My father passed away in 1991 and all of his papers and medals were missing.
He did not talk about the war much and so I have nothing of substance to pass along to my two sons.
I am looking for any information about my father’s division as well as where I might be able to get copies of his medals (I have been told that his were some of the records that were lost in the military records fire).
It would also be wonderful if there were some personal stories from his fellow soldiers that were in the same places that my father was so my sons and I could get a idea of what he went through. I do not expect anyone to remember him at this point.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You,
    Robin Blackley
